allotted time. This is not due to a lack of will — it is often due to their neurological profile. This practical guide provides two concrete and complementary strategies to manage slowness without stigmatization and without losing the rest of the class.</pee>

<pee>The scene is familiar: time is up, you ask everyone to put down their pens, and in the class, 5 to 8 students stare at their barely started sheet with that mix of shame and resignation that you have learned to recognize. You have two immediate options: continue and leave them unfinished, or give extra time and disrupt your progression. Neither is satisfactory. This guide proposes a third way: to design activities from the outset that take into account the actual processing speed of all your students, and to establish a peer support system that benefits both the students who progress slowly and those who progress quickly. Two concrete strategies, applicable as early as next week, with the DYNSEO tools that support them.</pee>

1. Understanding school slowness to respond better

1.1 Why some students do not progress at the same speed

<pee>School slowness is a symptom that can have very different origins — and confusing these origins leads to inappropriate interventions. A “slow” student because they are a perfectionist does not have the same needs as a slow student because their information processing is neurologically slower. Identifying the cause before intervening is the first professional gesture.</pee>
<pee>The neurological processing slowness (reduced information processing speed) is one of the most frequent manifestations in DYS profiles, ADHD, and some early profiles (gifted). The student understands, thinks, works — but each step takes longer than for others, not due to a lack of understanding but due to a neurobiological difference in synaptic transmission speed. This profile does not improve with impatience or pressure — it adapts with appropriate work formats. Perfectionism generates a different slowness: the student rewrites, erases, checks, hesitates — which may resemble processing slowness but requires different interventions (reducing perfectionism, explicit right to make mistakes). Performance anxiety produces paralysis in the face of the task — the student does not progress because they are so stressed about doing it wrong that they cannot start. Finally, real difficulty with the content (the student does not understand the concept) generates slowness that requires targeted pedagogical support rather than format adaptation.</pee>

    25–30 %
of primary students do not regularly complete exercises within the allotted time (CNESCO study, 2019)

    2–3x
slower: the information processing time in DYS students vs. neurotypical students for the same task

    –35 %
of agitation and anxiety behaviors in slow students when tasks are segmented into short files (INSPE Lyon, 2021)

    +28 %
progress in reading among students supported by peer pairs vs. teacher support alone (Topping, 2021)

1.2 The double problem of unmanaged task completion

<pee>When the management of slowness is not anticipated in the design of activities, two parallel problems emerge. For slow students: the accumulation of unfinished tasks gradually generates a feeling of chronic incapacity, a task avoidance strategy (“if I don’t start, I won’t risk not finishing”) and increasing demobilization. For fast students: once their work is finished, without a planned activity for them, they fidget, disrupt the class, or develop boredom behaviors that harm the overall climate. Both situations are avoidable with better pedagogical design upstream.</pee>

Source of slowness

Distinctive signs

What helps

What worsens

Neurological processing slowness

Correct but slow work, maintained quality, no visible hesitation

Adapted time, broken tasks, visual timer

Time pressure, comparison to others

Perfectionism

Frequent crossings out, restarts, comparison to an internal ideal

Explicit permission for imperfection, valuing progress

Formal presentation exercises, strict grading of presentation

Performance anxiety

Waiting for the starting signal, frequent requests for confirmation, paralysis at the beginning

Accompanied start, very clear instructions, reassuring peer

Timed exercises visible to all, immediate evaluation

Underlying difficulty

Frequent errors, misunderstanding of instructions, repeated requests for help

Targeted remediation, temporary simplification of content, tutoring peer

Acceleration of the program, moving on without consolidation

Lack of organization

Materials searched for a long time, poorly organized notebook, forgotten instructions

Checklist, structured organization, preparation routines

Accumulation of unorganized belongings, unprepared transitions

2. Short-duration files: design and examples

2.1 What is a short-duration file?

<pee>A short-duration file is an exercise resource designed to be completed in 5 to 15 minutes, focusing on a single and precise skill. Unlike core program exercises that can take 30 to 45 minutes, the short-duration file is short by design — not because the skill is simple, but because segmenting the effort improves engagement, reduces anxiety for slow students, and allows for natural differentiation in the classroom (the fast ones complete files while the slow ones finish the first).</pee>
<pee>The sports analogy is telling: a swimming coach does not have beginner swimmers swim 1 km lengths in their first lesson. They work on 25 m sequences with specific goals — arm technique, breathing, turns. The progressive mastery of short and targeted skills builds overall competence more effectively than a large catch-all exercise. The same logic applies to school learning.</pee>

2.2 Principles for designing an effective short-duration file

🎯

1. A single targeted skill

<pee>Each file focuses on a unique and specific skill (e.g.: multiplying by 10, identifying the subject of a sentence, agreeing the past participle with avoir). This uniqueness allows for precise feedback and measurable progress.</pee>
✓ Facilitates diagnosis and targeted remediation

⏱️

2. Duration displayed on the file

<pee>The estimated duration is clearly indicated on the file — “about 8 minutes” — with a visual timer signal. This information reduces anxiety (the student knows it is doable) and helps the teacher calibrate the organization of the session.</pee>
✓ Reduces time-related anxiety and aids planning

📶

3. Progressive difficulty level

<pee>In the file, the first 2 exercises are very accessible, the next 2 are at standard level, and the last is an optional challenge. Slow students complete the essential exercises; fast ones go further. All have completed the minimum.</pee>
    ✓ Natural differentiation without stigmatization

✅

4. Integrated or quick self-correction

<pee>Design the file for easy self-correction (answers on the back, color code, QR code) or very quick collective correction (maximum 3 minutes). Once created, they are reusable year after year with different students.</pee>

2.4 The visual timer as a natural regulator

<pee>The effectiveness of short-term files is amplified by the use of a DYNSEO Visual Timer displayed on the board during the activity. For students who have difficulty assessing the passing time (ADHD profiles, dyspraxia, anxiety), the visual timer replaces the abstract watch with a concrete and immediate representation of the remaining time. It reduces repetitive questions (“teacher, is it still long?”), helps fast students calibrate their pace, and gives the teacher an objective signal for transitioning between activities — without having to repeat “hurry up.”</pee>

3. Support pairs: a structured help that benefits both

3.1 The principle: why the peer is sometimes more effective than the teacher

<pee>Support pairs — or peer tutoring — rely on a well-documented pedagogical paradox: in certain situations, explaining a concept to a peer reinforces understanding better than listening to it explained by a teacher. This is the so-called protege-tutor effect or learning by teaching: the one who explains is forced to reformulate, find other ways to present things, and verify their own understanding — this process consolidates their knowledge in a way that simple reception does not allow. The tutored student benefits from an explanation in peer language — often closer to their own representation of the problem — and in a less intimidating setting than facing the teacher.</pee>
<pee>A meta-analysis by Keith Topping (University of Dundee, 2021) covering 200 studies on peer tutoring concludes a significant improvement in the results of both members of the pair in 80% of the studies, with particularly marked effects in reading, math, and science. The improvement is on average 28% greater than without tutoring — and the effect is comparable for both the tutor and the tutored.</pee>

3.2 The three types of support pairs

🤝 Progression pair

      Tutor: advanced student
Tutored: struggling student

<pee>The advanced student supports the student who has difficulties with a specific skill. This pair is the most common and well-known. To function, it requires training for tutors (how to explain without doing it for them) and regular rotation to avoid the permanent stigmatization of the tutored.</pee>

⚡ Speed pair

      Support: fast student
Accompanied: slow student

<pee>Specifically adapted to manage slowness: when the fast student has finished their file, they can join their partner to help them with the last exercises in a limited time. This help is structured and not permanent — it lasts a maximum of 3 to 5 minutes and focuses on a single exercise.</pee>

🔄 Alternating Partner

      Alternating roles
Both learn

<pee>The two students have different strengths and help each other in their respective areas — one is strong in grammar but slow in calculation, the other is the opposite. This partnership develops positive interdependence and symmetrical cooperation. Ideal for students who resist the fixed role of “the one who receives help”.</pee>

3.3 How to select and form partnerships

<pee>The selection of partnerships is a delicate pedagogical decision that requires more thought than it seems. A poorly formed partnership — two students who do not get along, or whose level gap is too great — can be counterproductive, even harmful to the self-esteem of the tutored student. A few principles guide the selection:</pee>
<pee>The optimal level gap is moderate — not too large (the tutor would not know how to simplify their explanation) nor too small (the help provided would be insufficient). The relational compatibility is important: the partnership must function in a climate of mutual trust. A quick questionnaire (“who would you feel comfortable working with?”) can guide the choice without imposing pairs that generate tension. The periodic rotation (every 3 to 4 weeks) prevents roles from becoming fixed and ensures that some students are not always in the role of the tutored — which could confirm their negative self-image.</pee>

      ❌ Ineffective partnership

The fast student does it instead

<pee>Without training, the naturally impatient tutor ends up writing the answers instead of the tutored student — which is faster but nullifies any educational benefit for both.</pee>

      ✅ Effective partnership

The tutor guides with questions

<pee>Prior training: “Your role is not to give the answer — it’s to ask questions to help your partner find it themselves.” Phrase to learn: “What do you already know about this topic?”</pee>

      ❌ Ineffective partnership

Unstructured and intrusive help

<pee>The tutor approaches the tutored student’s task without structure or time limit — which generates either dependence or discomfort in the helped student (fear of judgment, shame).</pee>

      ✅ Effective partnership

Bounded and ritualized help

<pee>Agreed signal to request help (card or raised hand), maximum duration of help (3 minutes), targeted exercise (not the entire sheet), and return to their own work or next file.</pee>

      ❌ Ineffective partnership

Fixed partnerships for the year

<pee>Permanently assigned partnerships end up crystallizing identities (“the strong” and “the weak”) — which harms the self-esteem of the tutored student and can create a non-productive dependency relationship.</pee>

      ✅ Effective pair

Rotation every 3-4 weeks

<pee>Display the regularly updated pair table, with a brief training moment for each new pair on the peer assistance rules. How long does it take to create a sufficient library of short duration files?

<pee>An operational library covers the key skills of a term — about 20 to 30 files. At a rate of 2 to 3 files created per week (about 20 minutes of work per week), the basic library is ready in 6 to 8 weeks. The time savings thereafter are considerable: a file created once is reusable indefinitely with different classes. Some teaching teams pool their file production among colleagues, dividing the creation work by the number of teachers involved.</pee>

2. How to manage a tutor student who does not want to play the role?

<pee>The reluctance of a designated tutor is often related to a fear of judgment (from peers if the help is not appreciated), to fatigue from always being the one who helps, or to an incompatibility with the assigned partner. Several responses: propose the role of tutor as a choice and not an obligation (rotation ensures that everyone will go through this role over time), change the partner if incompatibility is proven, and explicitly value tutoring behavior through the gamification system. If reluctance persists despite these adjustments, it is possible that this student may need cognitive or emotional support themselves and that the role of tutor is not suitable for their current situation.</pee>

3. Do short duration files replace core curriculum exercises?

<pee>No — they complement them. Core exercises (essays, complex problems, research work) have their place in a complete educational progression and allow for learning that short tasks cannot produce (management of complexity, cognitive endurance, transfer of skills). Short duration files are particularly effective for consolidation, revision, and training of specific skills. A balanced educational program integrates both formats.</pee>

4. How to prevent students from copying during individual files?

<pee>Copying is a real risk in any individual work system — and short duration files are no exception. A few precautions: slightly different files for neighboring pairs (modified order of exercises, different numerical data), a classroom layout that makes copying difficult, and a classroom culture that values personal effort over grades. Immediate self-correction (answers on the back of the file accessible after submission) reduces the interest in copying since each student can see their answers directly compared to the correct answers.</pee>

5. Do support pairs work in middle and high school?

<pee>Yes, with adaptations to the secondary context. Adolescents may resist structured tutoring more (due to fear of social judgment) — training in the tutor posture is even more important in secondary school. Pairs work better in subjects where practice and exercises are central (mathematics, languages, sciences). In high school, pairs often take a more autonomous form — self-managed study groups by the students themselves. The educational framework is less directive but the principles (no copying, guidance by questions, rotation of roles) remain the same.</pee>

6. How to manage a student who is always at the bottom of the ranking and constantly finds themselves in the role of tutee?

<pee>This student needs special attention for two reasons: first, their profile may require specialized assessment (PAP, referral to the school doctor) if slowness is systematic and associated with other difficulties. Second, they must find areas where they can also be a tutor — even in non-academic skills or activities (sports, crafts, games…). The role of tutor in an area of competence is a powerful self-esteem lever; not leaving any student permanently in the sole role of tutee is a fundamental educational and ethical rule.</pee>

7. Is the DYNSEO visual timer compatible with interactive whiteboards (IWBs)?

<pee>The DYNSEO visual timer is a downloadable tool — check the available formats on the tool’s page for compatibility with your equipment. Many free visual timer applications are directly compatible with the most common IWBs (SMART Board, Promethean). The essential point is that the timer is visible to all students simultaneously from their usual place — check visibility from the back rows before deployment. Some teachers also use a simple timer projected via their web browser.</pee>

8. Should parents be informed about the support pair system?

<pee>It is recommended to inform parents during a meeting or by brief message at the beginning of the year or before deploying the system. The information should highlight the educational value for both members of the pair (not just for the “helped” student), explain the principle of rotation, and reassure parents of struggling students that this system does not replace more intensive support if necessary. Most parents welcome this initiative — especially when the educational benefits of both roles are well explained.</pee>

📚 Manage slowness with pedagogical elegance

<pee>Short duration files + support pairs + DYNSEO visual Timer = a class where everyone progresses at their own pace without losing sight of the class. short duration files and support pairs

In every class, 20 to 30% of students do not complete exercises within the allotted time. This is not due to a lack of will — it is often due to their neurological profile. This practical guide provides two concrete and complementary strategies to manage slowness without stigmatization and without losing the rest of the class.

The scene is familiar: time is up, you ask everyone to put down their pens, and in the class, 5 to 8 students stare at their barely started sheet with that mix of shame and resignation that you have learned to recognize. Two concrete strategies, applicable as early as next week, with the DYNSEO tools that support them.

1. Understanding school slowness to respond better

1.1 Why some students do not progress at the same speed

School slowness is a symptom that can have very different origins — and confusing these origins leads to inappropriate interventions. A "slow" student because they are a perfectionist does not have the same needs as a slow student because their information processing is neurologically slower. Identifying the cause before intervening is the first professional gesture.

The neurological processing slowness (reduced information processing speed) is one of the most frequent manifestations in DYS profiles, ADHD, and some early profiles (gifted). Finally, real difficulty with the content (the student does not understand the concept) generates slowness that requires targeted pedagogical support rather than format adaptation.

    25–30 %
of primary students do not regularly complete exercises within the allotted time (CNESCO study, 2019)

    2–3x
slower: the information processing time in DYS students vs. neurotypical students for the same task

    –35 %
of agitation and anxiety behaviors in slow students when tasks are segmented into short files (INSPE Lyon, 2021)

    +28 %
progress in reading among students supported by peer pairs vs. teacher support alone (Topping, 2021)

1.2 The double problem of unmanaged task completion

When the management of slowness is not anticipated in the design of activities, two parallel problems emerge. For slow students: the accumulation of unfinished tasks gradually generates a feeling of chronic incapacity, a task avoidance strategy ("if I don't start, I won't risk not finishing") and increasing demobilization. For fast students: once their work is finished, without a planned activity for them, they fidget, disrupt the class, or develop boredom behaviors that harm the overall climate. Both situations are avoidable with better pedagogical design upstream.

Source of slowness

Distinctive signs

What helps

What worsens

Neurological processing slowness

Correct but slow work, maintained quality, no visible hesitation

Adapted time, broken tasks, visual timer

Time pressure, comparison to others

Perfectionism

Frequent crossings out, restarts, comparison to an internal ideal

Explicit permission for imperfection, valuing progress

Formal presentation exercises, strict grading of presentation

Performance anxiety

Waiting for the starting signal, frequent requests for confirmation, paralysis at the beginning

Accompanied start, very clear instructions, reassuring peer

Timed exercises visible to all, immediate evaluation

Underlying difficulty

Frequent errors, misunderstanding of instructions, repeated requests for help

Targeted remediation, temporary simplification of content, tutoring peer

Acceleration of the program, moving on without consolidation

Lack of organization

Materials searched for a long time, poorly organized notebook, forgotten instructions

Checklist, structured organization, preparation routines

Accumulation of unorganized belongings, unprepared transitions

2. Short-duration files: design and examples

2.1 What is a short-duration file?

A short-duration file is an exercise resource designed to be completed in 5 to 15 minutes, focusing on a single and precise skill. Unlike core program exercises that can take 30 to 45 minutes, the short-duration file is short by design — not because the skill is simple, but because segmenting the effort improves engagement, reduces anxiety for slow students, and allows for natural differentiation in the classroom (the fast ones complete files while the slow ones finish the first).

The sports analogy is telling: a swimming coach does not have beginner swimmers swim 1 km lengths in their first lesson. They work on 25 m sequences with specific goals — arm technique, breathing, turns. The progressive mastery of short and targeted skills builds overall competence more effectively than a large catch-all exercise. The same logic applies to school learning.

2.2 Principles for designing an effective short-duration file

🎯

1. For students who have difficulty assessing the passing time (ADHD profiles, dyspraxia, anxiety), the visual timer replaces the abstract watch with a concrete and immediate representation of the remaining time. Support pairs: a structured help that benefits both

3.1 The principle: why the peer is sometimes more effective than the teacher

Support pairs — or peer tutoring — rely on a well-documented pedagogical paradox: in certain situations, explaining a concept to a peer reinforces understanding better than listening to it explained by a teacher. This is the so-called protege-tutor effect or learning by teaching: the one who explains is forced to reformulate, find other ways to present things, and verify their own understanding — this process consolidates their knowledge in a way that simple reception does not allow. The tutored student benefits from an explanation in peer language — often closer to their own representation of the problem — and in a less intimidating setting than facing the teacher.

A meta-analysis by Keith Topping (University of Dundee, 2021) covering 200 studies on peer tutoring concludes a significant improvement in the results of both members of the pair in 80% of the studies, with particularly marked effects in reading, math, and science. The improvement is on average 28% greater than without tutoring — and the effect is comparable for both the tutor and the tutored.

3.2 The three types of support pairs

🤝 Progression pair

      Tutor: advanced student
      Tutored: struggling student

The advanced student supports the student who has difficulties with a specific skill. A poorly formed partnership — two students who do not get along, or whose level gap is too great — can be counterproductive, even harmful to the self-esteem of the tutored student. A few principles guide the selection:

The optimal level gap is moderate — not too large (the tutor would not know how to simplify their explanation) nor too small (the help provided would be insufficient). The relational compatibility is important: the partnership must function in a climate of mutual trust. A quick questionnaire ("who would you feel comfortable working with?") can guide the choice without imposing pairs that generate tension. The periodic rotation (every 3 to 4 weeks) prevents roles from becoming fixed and ensures that some students are not always in the role of the tutored — which could confirm their negative self-image.

      ❌ Ineffective partnership

The fast student does it instead

Without training, the naturally impatient tutor ends up writing the answers instead of the tutored student — which is faster but nullifies any educational benefit for both.

      ✅ Effective partnership

The tutor guides with questions

Prior training: "Your role is not to give the answer — it's to ask questions to help your partner find it themselves." Phrase to learn: "What do you already know about this topic?"

      ❌ Ineffective partnership

Unstructured and intrusive help

The tutor approaches the tutored student's task without structure or time limit — which generates either dependence or discomfort in the helped student (fear of judgment, shame).

      ✅ Effective partnership

Bounded and ritualized help

Agreed signal to request help (card or raised hand), maximum duration of help (3 minutes), targeted exercise (not the entire sheet), and return to their own work or next file.

      ❌ Ineffective partnership

Fixed partnerships for the year

Permanently assigned partnerships end up crystallizing identities ("the strong" and "the weak") — which harms the self-esteem of the tutored student and can create a non-productive dependency relationship.

      ✅ Effective pair

Rotation every 3-4 weeks

Display the regularly updated pair table, with a brief training moment for each new pair on the peer assistance rules. How long does it take to create a sufficient library of short duration files?

An operational library covers the key skills of a term — about 20 to 30 files. At a rate of 2 to 3 files created per week (about 20 minutes of work per week), the basic library is ready in 6 to 8 weeks. The time savings thereafter are considerable: a file created once is reusable indefinitely with different classes. Some teaching teams pool their file production among colleagues, dividing the creation work by the number of teachers involved.

2. How to manage a tutor student who does not want to play the role?

The reluctance of a designated tutor is often related to a fear of judgment (from peers if the help is not appreciated), to fatigue from always being the one who helps, or to an incompatibility with the assigned partner. Several responses: propose the role of tutor as a choice and not an obligation (rotation ensures that everyone will go through this role over time), change the partner if incompatibility is proven, and explicitly value tutoring behavior through the gamification system. If reluctance persists despite these adjustments, it is possible that this student may need cognitive or emotional support themselves and that the role of tutor is not suitable for their current situation.

3. Do short duration files replace core curriculum exercises?

No — they complement them. Core exercises (essays, complex problems, research work) have their place in a complete educational progression and allow for learning that short tasks cannot produce (management of complexity, cognitive endurance, transfer of skills). Short duration files are particularly effective for consolidation, revision, and training of specific skills. A balanced educational program integrates both formats.

4. How to prevent students from copying during individual files?

Copying is a real risk in any individual work system — and short duration files are no exception. A few precautions: slightly different files for neighboring pairs (modified order of exercises, different numerical data), a classroom layout that makes copying difficult, and a classroom culture that values personal effort over grades. Immediate self-correction (answers on the back of the file accessible after submission) reduces the interest in copying since each student can see their answers directly compared to the correct answers.

5. Do support pairs work in middle and high school?

Yes, with adaptations to the secondary context. The educational framework is less directive but the principles (no copying, guidance by questions, rotation of roles) remain the same.

6. How to manage a student who is always at the bottom of the ranking and constantly finds themselves in the role of tutee?

This student needs special attention for two reasons: first, their profile may require specialized assessment (PAP, referral to the school doctor) if slowness is systematic and associated with other difficulties. Second, they must find areas where they can also be a tutor — even in non-academic skills or activities (sports, crafts, games…). The role of tutor in an area of competence is a powerful self-esteem lever; not leaving any student permanently in the sole role of tutee is a fundamental educational and ethical rule.

7. Is the DYNSEO visual timer compatible with interactive whiteboards (IWBs)?

The DYNSEO visual timer is a downloadable tool — check the available formats on the tool's page for compatibility with your equipment. Many free visual timer applications are directly compatible with the most common IWBs (SMART Board, Promethean). The essential point is that the timer is visible to all students simultaneously from their usual place — check visibility from the back rows before deployment. Some teachers also use a simple timer projected via their web browser.

8. Should parents be informed about the support pair system?

It is recommended to inform parents during a meeting or by brief message at the beginning of the year or before deploying the system. The information should highlight the educational value for both members of the pair (not just for the "helped" student), explain the principle of rotation, and reassure parents of struggling students that this system does not replace more intensive support if necessary. Most parents welcome this initiative — especially when the educational benefits of both roles are well explained.

📚 Manage slowness with pedagogical elegance

Short duration files + support pairs + DYNSEO visual Timer = a class where everyone progresses at their own pace without losing sight of the class.
