Cognitive stimulation in service residences

We had the opportunity to organize a cognitive stimulation game workshop at the Les Résidentielles d'Or service residence in Châtillon! Very few residents were already familiar with the tablet, but in less than 5 minutes, they had adopted it.

The favorite games were:

- general knowledge quizzes

- proverbs

- timeline games

- memory games

All these games allowed them to work on their memory, concentration, and more, but in a playful way.

Thank you very much to the EMERA group for its organization.

The benefits of cognitive stimulation

Cognitive stimulation is essential for maintaining and improving the mental abilities of seniors. By participating in fun and stimulating activities, residents can benefit from several advantages:

  • Improvement of memory: Memory games strengthen neural connections and help prevent cognitive decline.
  • Enhancement of concentration: Activities requiring attention promote better concentration and greater alertness.
  • Socialization: Participating in group games encourages social interactions, thus reducing feelings of isolation.
  • Stimulation of creativity: Fun activities encourage residents to think creatively and solve problems.

Varied activities for all tastes

It is important to offer a variety of activities to meet the preferences and abilities of each resident. Here are some activity ideas that can be integrated into cognitive stimulation programs:

  • Painting and art workshops: Stimulate creativity while promoting fine motor skills.
  • Board games: Promote strategy, memory, and socialization among residents.
  • Readings and discussions: Encourage the exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences.
  • Cooking workshops: Allow residents to work on memory and learn new recipes while creating a friendly moment.

Integrating technology into cognitive stimulation

With the advent of new technologies, it is possible to integrate digital tools into cognitive stimulation programs. Here are some ways to use technology:

  • Educational game applications: Applications like JOE and EDITH offer games tailored for seniors, promoting learning and memory.
  • Tablets and computers: Allow residents to access various resources, such as e-books and educational videos.
  • Video conferences: Facilitate meetings with relatives or professionals, thereby strengthening the social link.
  • Social networks: Help maintain connections with family and friends while learning to use modern tools.

Encouraging autonomy through cognitive activities

Promoting residents' autonomy is a key objective of cognitive stimulation programs. Here are some activities that can help them strengthen their independence:

  • Thinking games: Such as crosswords or sudoku, which encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Memory workshops: Exercise mnemonic techniques to help retain important information.
  • Activity planning: Involve residents in organizing events, allowing them to make decisions and exercise their leadership.
  • Mindfulness exercises: Help manage stress and improve concentration, thus promoting better autonomy in daily life.
