Course overview

This course offers comprehensive support to help children with Down syndrome develop their communication skills. It combines theoretical knowledge about communicative characteristics with practical strategies that can be applied daily. The approach is caring and values the child’s strengths as much as solutions to the difficulties encountered.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the physiological and developmental features that impact oral communication (orofacial hypotonia, articulation difficulties, pace of vocabulary development).
2. Identify the communication strengths of children with Down syndrome (nonverbal expressiveness, stronger comprehension than expression, social motivation) and use them as levers for learning.
3. Recognize signs of frustration related to communication difficulties (anger, withdrawal, emotional outbursts) and respond appropriately.
4. Establish an environment that fosters communication by using visual supports (pictograms, photos, gestures), appropriate instructions, and exchange routines.
5. Stimulate oral language daily through articulation games, contextual vocabulary enrichment, and the read–sing–repeat trio.
6. Support children in expressing their needs and managing frustrations while fostering communicative autonomy.
7. Use DYNSEO digital tools (COCO PIENSA, COCO SE MUEVE, Mon Dico) to support communication development.
