The importance of play on well-being

Today, coaches have decided to turn to technological advancements, and see if in addition to entertaining us, training us, it would not make us happy… A beautiful challenge.

Indeed, technology continues to evolve, always at a faster pace and sometimes difficult to follow. All sectors are affected by these changes, and the video game industry is the first to exploit the possibilities.

Every day, thousands of video games are developed on tablets, laptops, desktops, smartphones, consoles, and many other platforms, each with its own specificity. There are war games, adventure games, various sports, strategy, and puzzle games.

Despite their controversial image, video games that children, teens, and adults are increasingly engaging with every day appeal to many cognitive functions without our knowledge.

And their impact is not limited to simple brain stimulation: video games could well be a vector of well-being, happiness, and at any age.

Video games: not just for children

Regardless of the player’s age, games provide access to numerous benefits: the ability to quickly develop strategies, strengthen social relationships by playing in groups, foster creativity in the face of new situations, educate oneself, and also slow down aging.

These benefits apply to adults and seniors too! Playing together promotes exchanges in a good mood and keeps isolation at bay. Moreover, games encourage us to react more spontaneously and thus relax by focusing on a situation without consequences on our daily worries: children are proof of this!

Playing makes you happy

Video games are not just an endless source of distraction. They are also a way to bring individuals closer together, to create bonds. And what could be more important as we age than to keep in touch with our loved ones and make new acquaintances to combat loneliness?

I discovered two studies, one from North Carolina University in the United States and the other from Griffith University in Australia, which demonstrated that adults who play video games regularly (more than once a week) experience a sense of happiness that is as unexpected as it is undeniable!

The study from North Carolina University surveyed 140 people aged 63 and older.

61% reported playing video games at least occasionally, with 35% playing at least once a week.

Video games also reduce the risk of depression by distracting the player for their greater good at all ages. That’s good news.

Video games in service of the elderly

Video games, considered as therapeutic means for seniors, could not only improve their brain flexibility and memory but also allow them to break out of their sometimes daily isolation to play in groups and give them a boost of vitality.

Nothing is better than playing while combining brain training, exchanges, and emotional well-being! Here is Dr. Jeannette’s prescription: video games, like those developed by the start-up DYNSEO, simple and intuitive, should be consumed (almost) without moderation. And having played, I readily believe this study on well-being!

Today, we are just beginning to consider the applications of our technological discoveries, and I will keep you informed of all these advancements that change daily life.

The cognitive benefits of video games

Video games are not just a source of entertainment; they also offer significant cognitive advantages. Here are some cognitive benefits associated with their practice:

  • Improvement of memory: Games that require remembering information, such as puzzles and strategy games, stimulate short and long-term memory.
  • Enhancement of attention: Action games, for example, demand intense concentration and help improve attention capacity.
  • Development of problem-solving skills: Puzzle and riddle games encourage players to think critically and develop effective strategies.
  • Stimulation of creativity: Games that allow for customization or free exploration foster players’ imagination and creativity.

These elements show how video games can be integrated into cognitive training programs for seniors, thus providing them with a playful way to enhance their mental abilities.

Video games as tools for socialization

Video games can also serve as powerful tools for socialization, especially for elderly people. Here’s how they promote social interactions:

  • Creation of communities: Online gaming platforms allow players to meet and form groups, thus fostering a sense of belonging.
  • Facilitation of exchanges: Multiplayer games encourage communication among participants, whether through voice discussions or chats.
  • Organization of events: Many games offer events and tournaments that bring together players from diverse backgrounds, creating opportunities for meeting.
  • Sharing experiences: Playing together allows for sharing gaming experiences, which can strengthen friendships and reduce feelings of loneliness.

By integrating video games into group activities, seniors can not only have fun but also forge valuable connections.

Video games and mental health

Mental health is a crucial aspect of well-being, and video games can play a positive role in this area. Here are some ways they can contribute to mental health:

  • Reduction of stress: Playing video games can act as a form of escape, allowing players to relax and escape daily concerns.
  • Improvement of mood: Fun and engaging games can release endorphins, contributing to an overall sense of happiness.
  • Management of anxiety: Some games are specifically designed to help manage anxiety, providing calm and relaxing environments.
  • Encouragement of resilience: Challenges in video games help players develop their ability to overcome obstacles and cope with failure, thereby strengthening their mental resilience.

These aspects highlight the importance of considering video games as potential tools for improving the mental health of elderly people.

Video games adapted for seniors

With the increase in the aging population, it is essential to develop video games tailored to the needs of seniors. Here are some characteristics to consider:

  • Accessibility: Games should be easy to understand and play, with intuitive interfaces and simple controls.
  • Engaging themes: Games addressing familiar or nostalgic themes can capture the interest of older players.
  • Cognitive exercises: Games that stimulate memory, logic, and concentration are particularly beneficial for cognitive development.
  • Social interaction: Games that allow for online play with others promote social interactions and reduce isolation.

By developing video games specifically designed for seniors, we can maximize cognitive and social benefits while ensuring an enjoyable and enriching gaming experience.
