🎴 Fluency cards

6 techniques for fluent speaking

🎯 How do I use these cards?

These cards present the main techniques for improving speech fluency. Each technique can be worked on during a session and then practiced at home. Children can keep the mini-cards with them as a reminder.

🌬️
Abdominal breathing

📖 What is it?

Breathe with your stomach (not your shoulders) to get enough air to speak calmly.

🔧 How do I do it?

  • Put your hand on your belly
  • Inhale through your nose: your belly expands
  • Breathe out through your mouth: your belly deflates
  • Speak on exhale

⏰ When to use it

Before you start talking, especially if you're feeling stressed.

🎵
Soft start

📖 What is it?

Start speaking softly, without straining, as if singing the beginning of the word.

🔧 How do I do it?

  • Relax your throat and mouth
  • Start the sound very softly
  • Gradually increases the volume
  • Slide to the rest of the word

⏰ When to use it

For words beginning with a difficult vowel or sound.

Extension

Stretch sounds slightly to speak more fluently, as if singing.

🔧 How do I do it?

  • Choose a word to say
  • Stretch out the first sound: "mmmmaison" (house)
  • Link syllables together
  • Keep a steady pace

⏰ When to use it

Pause and breathe

📖 What is it?

Stop regularly to catch your breath and stay in control.

🔧 How do I do it?

  • Speak in small word groups
  • Pause at every comma or period
  • Inhale during the pause
  • Resume calmly

⏰ When to use it

During long sentences or when you're running out of air.

🧘
Muscle relaxation

📖 What is it?

Relax your mouth, throat and shoulder muscles before speaking.

🔧 How do I do it?

  • Drop your shoulders
  • Relax your jaw (mouth slightly open)
  • Release your tongue at the back of your mouth
  • Make a few yawns

⏰ When to use it

Before a stressful situation (presentation, telephone...).

👀
Light eye contact

📖 What is it?

Maintain natural eye contact to stay connected and confident.

🔧 How do I do it?

  • Look at the person from time to time
  • You can look at the forehead or the nose
