6 techniques for fluent speaking
🎯 How do I use these cards?
These cards present the main techniques for improving speech fluency. Each technique can be worked on during a session and then practiced at home. Children can keep the mini-cards with them as a reminder.
📖 What is it?
Breathe with your stomach (not your shoulders) to get enough air to speak calmly.
🔧 How do I do it?
- Put your hand on your belly
- Inhale through your nose: your belly expands
- Breathe out through your mouth: your belly deflates
- Speak on exhale
⏰ When to use it
Before you start talking, especially if you're feeling stressed.
📖 What is it?
Start speaking softly, without straining, as if singing the beginning of the word.
🔧 How do I do it?
- Relax your throat and mouth
- Start the sound very softly
- Gradually increases the volume
- Slide to the rest of the word
⏰ When to use it
For words beginning with a difficult vowel or sound.
📖 What is it?
Stretch sounds slightly to speak more fluently, as if singing.
🔧 How do I do it?
- Choose a word to say
- Stretch out the first sound: "mmmmaison" (house)
- Link syllables together
- Keep a steady pace
⏰ When to use it
When you feel you're going to get stuck on a word.
📖 What is it?
Stop regularly to catch your breath and stay in control.
🔧 How do I do it?
- Speak in small word groups
- Pause at every comma or period
- Inhale during the pause
- Resume calmly
⏰ When to use it
During long sentences or when you're running out of air.
📖 What is it?
Relax your mouth, throat and shoulder muscles before speaking.
🔧 How do I do it?
- Drop your shoulders
- Relax your jaw (mouth slightly open)
- Release your tongue at the back of your mouth
- Make a few yawns
⏰ When to use it
Before a stressful situation (presentation, telephone...).
📖 What is it?
Maintain natural eye contact to stay connected and confident.
🔧 How do I do it?
- Look at the person from time to time
- You can look at the forehead or the nose
- Look away sometimes, it's normal
- Stay relaxed, don't stare
