What you will learn
Supporting a child with Down syndrome towards independence requires patience, organization and adaptation. Daily tasks — getting dressed, washing, tidying up, eating — are all learning opportunities, but can quickly become a source of tension if the framework isn’t adapted.
This training gives you practical keys to structure daily life, use effective visual tools, adapt the environment and maintain your child’s motivation. A realistic approach to help your child progress without exhausting the family or creating excessive pressure.
By the end of this training, you will be able to:
- Understand how children with Down syndrome learn independence: the role of motivation, step-by-step progression, mistakes as learning opportunities
- Establish essential morning routines: getting dressed, washing, preparation, with adapted visual sequences
- Structure transitions and key moments: outings, homework, activities, switching from one task to another
- Create calming evening routines: bath/shower, tidying up, bedtime, reassuring rituals
- Use effective visual tools: step-by-step sequences, choice between 2 options to avoid cognitive overload, pictograms and concrete supports
- Adapt everyday equipment: easy-to-use clothing, bathroom adaptations, kitchen and storage space organization, independence stations
- Encourage and maintain motivation: simple positive reinforcement (without gifts), valuing effort rather than perfection, visual progress systems
- Adjust your expectations according to the day: spotting signs of fatigue, adjusting routines, avoiding guilt, managing difficult periods
- Create a reassuring environment: anticipate, prepare, limit sources of stress, respect your child’s pace, celebrate every small achievement
You will leave with practical tools: printable visual sequence templates (morning, evening, transitions), practical adaptation examples for each room, sustainable motivation strategies, and a progressive action plan to develop independence without tension or family exhaustion.
