Introduce yourself to someone
1
The situation
I'm in a new place (school, activity, party). I see someone my age that I don't know. I'd like to get to know them.
2
How I feel
I may feel a little shy or nervous. It's perfectly normal! Everyone feels that way sometimes. I can take a deep breath to calm myself down.
3
What I can do
I approach with a smile. I look at the person (no need to stare). I say:
Hi! I'm [my first name]. What's your name?
I wait for his reply. Then I can ask:
What games/sports/music do you like?

I wait for his reply. Then I can ask:
What games/sports/music do you like?
4
The result
The person will probably reply and we can start talking. Even if she's a bit shy too, I've taken the first step. I can be proud of myself!
Ask for help
1
The situation
I can't do something (an exercise, open an object, find my way). I've tried on my own but I'm stuck.
2
How I feel
I may feel frustrated or embarrassed to ask. But asking for help isn't a weakness! Everyone needs help sometimes, even adults.
3
What I can do
I look for someone who can help me (adult, friend). I approach politely and say:
Excuse me, could you please help me?
I explain my problem clearly. I listen to the advice and say:
Thank you very much!

Thank you very much!
4
The result
Most people are happy to help. I'll probably solve my problem and learn something new!
Join a group
1
The situation
At playtime or elsewhere, I see children playing together. I'd like to play with them, but they've already started their game.
2
How I feel
I might be afraid they'll say no. It's normal to be worried. But if I don't ask, I'll never know!
3
What I can do
I walk over and watch what they're doing for a while. I wait for a pause in the game, then say:
Hi! Sounds cool. Can I play with you?
If it's yes: great! I'm joining the game.
If not: that's okay, I can find something else or try again later.

If not: that's okay, I can find something else or try again later.
4
The result
Often, the others are happy to have a new player! And even if they refuse this time, I can be proud of having dared to ask.
Handling a disagreement
1
The situation
Someone disagrees with me or has done something to upset me. We don't want the same thing.
2
How I feel
I can feel frustrated or angry. It's OK to feel that way! But I need to calm down first before I speak. I take a few breaths.
3
What I can do
I speak in a calm voice (no shouting). I use "I":
I don't like it when... because it makes me feel...
I listen to what the other has to say. We look for a solution together:
How can we make this work for both of us?

4
The result
When we talk calmly, we often find a compromise. Even if we don't totally agree, we can still be friends and respect each other.
Accepting defeat
1
The situation
I play a game (board game, sport, video game) and lose. The other person or team wins.
2
How I feel
I can feel disappointed or frustrated. It's normal to want to win! But losing is part of the game. Everyone loses sometimes, even champions.
3
What I can do
I take a deep breath. I congratulate the winner:
Well done! You played well.
I don't shout, I don't sulk. I can say:
Shall we play again? Next time I'll do better!

I don't shout, I don't sulk. I can say:
Shall we play again? Next time I'll do better!
4
The result
The others will want to play with me again because I'm a good loser. And I'll get better the more I play. Win or lose, the important thing is to have fun!
Receive a compliment
1
The situation
Someone says something nice to me: "I like your drawing", "You're good at this game", "You're nice".
2
How I feel
I may feel embarrassed or not know what to say. Some people don't like to be the center of attention. That's OK!
3
What I can do
I look at the person and smile. I simply say:
Thank you very much!
I can also give a compliment in return if I feel like it:
Thanks! I like your [stuff] too.

4
The result
Accepting a compliment makes the person who paid it happy. And it allows me to recognize my qualities. I can feel good about myself!
