The introduction of touch-screen tablets in retirement homes has delighted residents! Innovative, modern, new technology, they like it, and it must be said, it has a “magical” side.

In a nursing home or EHPAD, theanimation project is essential to maintain joie de vivre and happiness between residents, staff, caregivers and their families. The tablet then appeared as a mediation tool between staff and residents, but also between residents and their families, who can now play with their parents when they come to visit them, or simply send them photos and messages remotely.

Retirement home entertainment 2.0, which has already won over 1,200 establishments!

Different uses of the tablet

Each establishment uses tablets in its own way, and here are the different ways of using them:

  • in a group workshop with several tablets, or with a tablet projected onto a large screen so that everyone can participate.
  • in individual workshops, especially when residents need to be stimulated on a particular function, or if they don’t like to take part in group activities.
  • in a protected unit, with dedicated, adapted games that don’t put players in check.
  • Day Care dedicated spaces.
  • freely accessible, for residents when they want it or for families when they come to visit.

For all professionals in the facility

Several of the facility’s professionals use our tablet-based memory games every day, each with their own angle of attack:

  • entertainers to stimulate the elderly
  • psychologists and psychomotricians, as part of their memory workshop
  • coordinating doctors can monitor individual statistics on the web platform.
  • Medical and Psychological Help staff and care assistants, who are increasingly asked to take part in entertainment activities, can easily create general knowledge or music quizzes on the tablet and enjoy playing with the residents!

The objectives of our animation program

Stimulate your residents’ cognitive functions (executive functions, attention, concentration, learning strategies, etc.)

Breaking isolation and promote social and intergenerational ties

Prevent and identify fragility

Stimulate curiosity and the desire to play

Group activitiesto encourage debate and exchange among residents.

Developing well-being

The keys to success

  • Adapting games to each individual’s abilities: games are designed so as not to put residents at a disadvantage. What’s more, the professional’s role is to guide the resident towards the games that are best suited to them, and that will help them work on the functions they need to stimulate.
  • Helping residents learn how to use the tablet: 4 to 5 coaching sessions are needed to teach them how to use the tablet properly (lay the finger flat, don’t press too hard, the “Quit” button, etc.).
  • Multiply play opportunities and test it in different configurations (see “Different ways of using the tablet”).
  • Don’t be fussy: some residents will amaze you with their abilities! Don’t hesitate to try out the touchpad with them, even with very dependent people, because magical moments can happen…

The homes tell us that, with a little training, they’ll be clamouring for the tablets to play on their own!

TESTIMONIALS

OF OUR USERS

KARINE

Gerontological care assistant at Résidence La Chêneraie (33), Orpea

We’ve had it. They are in no way inhibited in front of the screen. It’s a totally new object for them, and they’re all embracing it, without the slightest complex.

Our workshops are a privileged moment, as we place the players in pairs, with a tablet. Not only can they play, but they also learn to share, respect and support each other, creating a sense of solidarity. We’ve got a tennis game that’s particularly popular and provokes bursts of laughter the likes of which we don’t often hear any more. We have a protected unit in the residence, with 12 more impaired people. We tried the experiment with them, and once again found no apprehension. Finally, we’ve found a new tool. It’s not always easy to come up with new, adapted occupations. We also believe that tablets will help us to reconnect with our visitors. Families, grandchildren, who sometimes get bored here. Now there’s a common interest, children can play with it, and it’s an incredible intergenerational medium.

CÉCILE

Psychologist at the Normandy Cottage Residence (94), Orpea

The games work very well in workshops. I’ve used them in memory workshops with residents with little cognitive impairment, both independently and in group workshops. They need guidance, but they soon become self-sufficient.

I’ve also used the tablets in our protected unit, where they’ve also worked very well. They were stimulated beyond my expectations. I was also able to collect 5 words from a mute resident who hadn’t spoken in words for months. In short, it’s a great cognitive stimulation tool for everyone.
