How to set up a cognitive and motor exercise area safely?

Walking while following an instruction, memorizing a sequence of movements, or maintaining balance while answering a question simultaneously engages the brain and the body. These activities can be offered as part of rehabilitation, adapted physical activity, or support aimed at preserving autonomy.

However, their difficulty does not solely depend on the exercise. A cluttered space, poorly readable cues, or an unsuitable surface can disrupt movements and distract attention.

Why combine cognition and movement?

In daily life, we regularly perform several actions at the same time. We can walk while talking, carry an object while moving, or change our trajectory after spotting an obstacle. These situations engage attention, memory, spatial perception, and coordination.

The so-called "dual-task" exercises replicate this functioning by combining a cognitive instruction with a motor action. They may require following a path while naming objects, performing certain gestures in a specific order, or reacting to visual cues.

Their difficulty should evolve gradually according to the person's abilities. When integrated into rehabilitation, they must be selected and supervised by a professional.

How to organize the exercise area?

The surface should be sufficiently clear to facilitate movement and allow a helper to intervene. Cables, small furniture, and unused accessories should not encroach on pathways.

Visual cues can materialize a direction, a position, or the steps of a path. They should remain easy to identify without overloading the environment. Balls, elastic bands, cones, or hoops can be placed nearby, provided they are stored outside the circulation space when not in use.

What properties to look for in the floor?

Cognitive and motor exercises may involve changes in direction, weight transfers, or balance movements. The floor must therefore provide stable supports, sufficient grip, and a regular surface.

Too soft a covering can make certain gestures less precise. Conversely, a very hard surface absorbs little of the energy produced by dynamic movements or the potential fall of an accessory. Therefore, a compromise between firmness and cushioning should be sought.

Why consider a rubber covering?

Rubber allows for a durable and grippy floor while mitigating some impacts. It can thus be suitable for balance exercises as well as more dynamic activities.

SquareFLOOR develops gym tiles that create a surface suitable for movements performed standing or on the ground. Their modular format facilitates space organization, while the different thicknesses allow for adjusting the level of cushioning to the exercises and equipment used.

An environment to adapt to each person

A properly arranged space does not automatically make an exercise suitable. The complexity of the instructions, the duration of the session, and the intensity of the movements must always take into account the physical and cognitive abilities of the person.

The goal remains to create a coherent framework in which movement, attention, and coordination can be worked on progressively, in service of mobility and autonomy.
