About Course
Managing the emotions of a child with autism
Understanding, Preventing, and Supporting Emotional Outbursts
Target Audience
Parents, grandparents, and family caregivers of autistic children who wish to understand their child’s emotional functioning and acquire concrete tools to prevent and manage daily crises.
Duration
1 hour of training divided into 5 progressive modules.
Format
100% online training, accessible from your computer or tablet. Progress at your own pace, whenever you wish, without time constraints.
Overview
Understand why an autistic child may react with intense emotions and why overflows can occur suddenly. Learn to identify typical crisis triggers and recognize warning signs to intervene before an explosion. Discover strategies adapted to autistic functioning and use visual and sensory tools to support regulation. Create a predictable, safe environment that fosters development and everyday well-being.
Learning outcomes
- Understand autistic functioning: a different operating system, neither better nor worse
- Identify sensory particularities: hypersensitivity (amplified perception) and hyposensitivity (seeking stimulation)
- Recognize warning signs of an overflow: physical, emotional, and behavioral signs
- Identify the 5 typical triggers: sensory overload, changes/unexpected events, transitions, communication difficulties, social interactions
- Use the 3-column tool to analyze difficult situations (trigger → reaction → need)
- Make time visible with visual timers, hourglasses, and gradual preparation for transitions
- Create a visual schedule with pictograms for daily routines
- Set up a calm corner and create a sensory survival kit for outings
- Implement needs cards and an emotion thermometer
- Apply sensory regulation techniques: deep pressure, sensory objects, movement, adapted breathing
- Follow the intervention script in case of a crisis: safety, sensory reduction, minimal communication, support
- Use visual regulation tools: emotion thermometer, choice wheel, visual sequences
- Establish an adapted evening ritual: daily weather, pride of the day, needs for tomorrow
- Adapt your communication: literal language, one instruction at a time, processing time, visual supports
- Provide appropriate reinforcement: specific feedback, efforts rather than results, intense interests
Practical tools you will take away
3-column chart, pictograms, emotion thermometer, visual schedule, choice wheel, regulation sequences, and a sensory techniques guide.
Bonus
Discovery of the COCO PENSE & COCO BOUGE application, with its game “Mime an Emotion” to develop emotional recognition and expression, and its sports breaks to regulate energy.
