Lion's mane and memory: what is the real value of the "brain mushroom"?

What studies say, what they don't say, how to choose a supplement, and why the basics of memory remain the same.

✓ Studies in humans✓ Extract or powder✓ Practical tips
In brief

Training your memory, sleeping well, moving, eating well: the solid levers are known. For a few years, a mushroom has entered the conversation: lion's mane, or lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus). What do we really know, and how to distinguish between studies and promises?

The short answer: some small studies in adults give interesting signals, particularly in cases of mild cognitive decline, but they are too few and too short to be conclusive. Lion's mane remains a dietary supplement, not a treatment.

🎯 To remember in 30 seconds

  • Lion's mane contains two families of compounds unique to this mushroom: hericenones (cap) and erinacines (mycelium).
  • In animals and in vitro, they are associated with the production of NGF, a protein involved in the survival of neurons: a lead, not proof in humans.
  • In humans, 3 small studies (about a hundred participants in total) give signals to confirm.
  • The studied doses correspond to 1 to 3 g of dry mushroom per day; powder and concentrated extract are not equivalent.
  • It adds to a good lifestyle, it does not replace it.

What is lion's mane?

Definition: lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus), also called lion's mane or hedgehog, is an edible and traditional medicinal mushroom. It is recognized by its pom-pom shape covered with long spines, and it is sold fresh, in powder, in extract, or in capsules.

A mushroom, two families of molecules

Lion's mane is a white mushroom, shaped like a pom-pom with long spines, that grows on beech and oak trees. In Japan, it is cooked; in China, it is part of traditional pharmacopoeia.

In the cap

The hericenones

A first family of compounds, found in the visible part of the mushroom (the fruiting body).

In the mycelium

The erinacines

A second family, found in the mycelium, that is, the filamentous network of the mushroom.

What interests laboratories are these two families of compounds that are only found in it. In vitro and in animals, they have been associated with the production of NGF, a protein involved in the survival of neurons. This is a lead, not proof in humans.

What studies show in humans

They are few and small, which requires caution.

Mori et al., 2009

Mild cognitive decline

30 adults aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive decline, 3 g of lion's mane per day for 16 weeks versus placebo. Cognitive scores improved in the supplemented group, then returned to baseline four weeks after stopping.

Saitsu et al., 2019

Adults over 50

31 adults over 50, 12 weeks, improvement in some cognitive scores compared to placebo.

Nagano et al., 2010

Mood and anxiety

30 women for 4 weeks, reported lower anxiety and mood scores.

3studies in humans
~100participants in total
4 to 16weeks of follow-up
1 to 3 gof dried mushroom / day

Three studies, about a hundred participants in total, short durations: we are talking about signals to confirm. No health claims are allowed in Europe for this mushroom, and it does not replace medical follow-up or, for memory, regular cognitive training.

⚠️ Why to be cautious about these results

  • Small samples: about thirty people per study, too few to generalize.
  • Short durations: from 4 to 16 weeks, nothing is known about long-term effects.
  • Effect that disappears upon stopping: in the 2009 study, scores returned to baseline four weeks after stopping.
  • Different preparations: powder, extract, part of the mushroom, doses: the tested products are not commercial ones.
  • Effects measured by scores: an improvement on a test does not necessarily translate to a visible change in daily life.

Extract or powder: the important question

The studied doses correspond to 1 to 3 g of dried mushroom per day. However, a capsule of powder and a capsule of concentrated extract have nothing in common. A serious manufacturer indicates the equivalent in dry matter, the amount of extract, and the part of the mushroom used: fruiting body rather than mycelium grown on grain, which mainly contains the starch of the substrate.

FormWhat is it?To verify
Fruiting body powderThe dried mushroom then ground, without concentration. The actual amount per serving, in mg of dried mushroom.
Concentrated extractAn extract of the mushroom, more concentrated than simple powder. The equivalent in dry matter and the amount of extract.
Mycelium on grainThe mycelium grown on a cereal substrate. The actual share of mushroom: the product mainly contains the starch of the substrate.

💡 The 4 questions to ask when looking at a label

  • What part of the mushroom is used (fruiting body or mycelium)?
  • What is the dose in dry equivalent per serving?
  • Is it powder or extract, and at what concentration?
  • Is the origin and place of manufacture clearly indicated?

For example, the French brand Mush n Go doses its lion's mane at 1,000 mg of dry equivalent per cup in its Brainstoorm coffee (only 20 mg of caffeine), and combines it with bacopa, ginkgo, and saffron in its Focus cure, caffeine-free. The recipes are made in Toulouse; the extracts come from Asia, which the brand indicates.

In practice

⏳ Patience

A course is judged over several weeks, not on a single intake.

🩺 Precautions

This is a dietary supplement: not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, and to be discussed with your doctor in case of anticoagulant treatment.

🌱 A plus, not a base

Lion's mane is an addition to a healthy lifestyle, it does not replace it: sleep, physical activity, and memory exercises remain the foundation.

The real levers of memory

Before asking which supplement to choose, let's recall what has proven most effective in maintaining memory on a daily basis:

  • Sleep: it is during the night that the brain consolidates memories. Regular and sufficient sleep is a pillar.
  • Physical activity: walking, swimming, cycling… moving regularly also benefits the brain.
  • Nutrition: a varied plate, rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and good fats, supports cognitive health.
  • Cognitive training: memory, logic, attention games; regularity matters more than duration.
  • Social connection and curiosity: discussing, learning, taking on new challenges stimulate mental abilities.

Frequently asked questions about lion's mane

Does lion's mane really improve memory?

Data in humans is limited: three small studies, about a hundred participants in total, over short durations. They provide signals to confirm, particularly in adults over 50, but they do not allow for conclusions.

What dose of lion's mane has been studied?

The doses studied correspond to 1 to 3 g of dry mushroom per day, over periods of 4 to 16 weeks.

What is the difference between lion's mane powder and extract?

A powder is the dried and ground mushroom. An extract is concentrated: by weight, it does not provide the same amount of compounds. Therefore, it is necessary to look at the equivalent in dry matter and the part of the mushroom used.

Should I choose the cap or the mycelium?

Reference studies focus on the mushroom itself. Mycelium grown on grain mainly contains the starch of the substrate: it is better to favor a product whose label specifies the fruiting body and the actual dose.

Is lion's mane safe?

It is a dietary supplement to be discussed with a healthcare professional. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, and should be examined with your doctor in case of anticoagulant treatment.

How long does it take to see an effect?

A course is judged over several weeks, not on a single intake. In the 2009 study, the observed effect disappeared four weeks after stopping.

Can we do without memory training if we take lion's mane?

No. Sleep, physical activity, diet, and memory exercises remain the foundation. Lion's mane adds to it, it does not replace it.
