🧭
Visuo-spatial perception is the brain's ability to perceive, analyse and mentally manipulate visual and spatial information. It allows us to understand the relationships between objects, navigate in space and visualise transformations. Answer according to your real daily abilities — not what you would like to do.

Spatial orientation
Finding your way in space, understanding directions and navigating in an unknown place.
🔄
Mental rotation

Orientation

🧠 The visuo-spatial components

Visuo-spatial perception is a set of complementary abilities used every day.

🗺️

Spatial orientation

The ability to find your way in space, understand directions and navigate familiar or new environments without getting lost.

🔄

Mental rotation

The ability to imagine an object rotated in space without physically manipulating it — essential for assembling furniture, driving or reading architectural plans.

🧩

Shape recognition

The ability to identify shapes, perceive patterns and distinguish details in a complex visual set (puzzles, maps, diagrams).

📐

Spatial relationships & estimations

Understanding relative positions and estimating distances/volumes — indispensable for storage, parking and manual activities.

✅ Practical everyday applications

  • Driving: manoeuvres, distance estimation, parallel parking
  • Reading maps and plans: metro, GPS, building layout
  • Manual activities: DIY, storage, cooking, sewing
  • Reading diagrams: charts, instruction manuals, architectural plans
  • Sports: anticipating trajectories, spatial coordination

❓ Improving visuo-spatial abilities

Can visuo-spatial abilities be improved at any age?
Yes. The brain is plastic and these skills respond well to training. Puzzles, building games, map reading, origami and navigation games are particularly effective. Progress is measurable within just a few weeks of regular practice.
What conditions can affect visuo-spatial perception?
Marked difficulties may be associated with dyspraxia, certain learning disorders, strokes affecting the parietal lobe or neurodegenerative diseases. In older adults, a decline in spatial perception may be an early warning sign to monitor with a professional.
Do women have poorer spatial abilities than men?
The group differences observed in some studies are small and linked to experience and training rather than biology. Studies show that these differences disappear after just a few hours of practising spatial games.
How do DYNSEO programmes stimulate spatial abilities?
COCO (children) offers puzzles, mazes and assembly games. JOE (adults) includes mental rotation and shape recognition exercises. EDITH (seniors) works on orientation and place memory in an adapted way.
