Impulsivity Management Sheet:
what is it for and how to use it?
Complete presentation of the DYNSEO tool, detailed structure, and concrete usage modes to work on impulsivity in ADHD sessions, at home, and in class
Impulsivity is the most visible symptom of ADHD — and often the most misunderstood. Shouting an answer in class, pushing a peer unintentionally, slamming a door in a fit of frustration: these behaviors are not due to bad will. They are the expression of a prefrontal cortex that takes longer to activate behavioral brakes. The DYNSEO impulsivity management sheet is specifically designed to work on these brakes — in speech therapy sessions, at home, and in class. This complete guide presents the tool and its usage modes.
1. Impulsivity in ADHD: understanding to intervene better
🧠 The neurological mechanism of impulsivity
In ADHD, the prefrontal cortex — responsible for behavioral inhibition — shows slower and less effective activation. The normal sequence "stimulus → evaluation → response" shortens to "stimulus → response" without the evaluation phase. This reduced inhibition delay explains impulsive behaviors: not a lack of will, but a neurological circuit that activates the response before the cognitive brake has had time to activate.
1.1 The 4 types of impulsivity in ADHD
🗣️ Verbal impulsivity
Interrupting, answering before the end of the question, saying everything that comes to mind. Common in class and during sessions.
→ Raised hand technique + script🤸 Motor impulsivity
Acting physically without thinking — getting up, touching, pushing. Often confused with aggression.
→ STOP protocol + physical outlet😤 Emotional impulsivity
Very rapid and intense emotional reactions, disproportionate to the situation.
→ Thermoregulation + emotional sheet💭 Decision-making impulsivity
Making decisions without evaluating the consequences. Impact on social and school life.
→ "And then?" technique + 3 options2. The DYNSEO impulsivity management sheet: structure and content

2.1 The STOP protocol — core of the sheet
🛑 STOP Protocol — DYNSEO Impulsivity Management Sheet
Stop
Take a physical pause before acting — at least 3 seconds
Think
Identify the impulse: "What do I want to do?"
Options
List 2 other ways to react to the same situation
Plan
Choose the best option and act consciously
2.2 The sections of the sheet
Behavior identification
What impulsive behavior? In what situation? Who was present?
STOP protocol
Step-by-step guidance of the pause-reflection-choice process to apply
Strategies by type
Specific strategies according to the identified type of impulsivity (verbal, motor, emotional...)
Post-behavior reflection
Debriefing space after the incident: what happened, what could I have done?
Action plan
What I will do differently next time in a similar situation

3.1 In speech therapy sessions
🎯 Psychoeducation on impulsivity
Before using the sheet, explain to the child what is happening in their brain: "Your brain is very fast — it reacts before the brake has time to activate. We will train this brake together." This explanation de-dramatizes impulsive behaviors and gives meaning to the tool.
🎯 Role-playing with the sheet
Simulate triggering situations in session (someone interrupts you, a task is too difficult) and practice the STOP protocol in real-time. Training in a secure context allows the sequence to be automated before it needs to be used in real life.
🎯 Debriefing incidents of the week
At the beginning of the session, use the "post-behavior reflection" section to analyze an incident from the week. This retrospective work develops behavioral metacognition — the ability to understand one's own reactions.
3.2 At home
- Display the sheet (laminated version) in usual tension areas — kitchen, workspace
- Use the "post-behavior reflection" section after family incidents, in a calm moment (never in the heat of the action)
- Praise every spontaneous use of the STOP protocol — even if the behavior is not perfect
- Share observations of triggering situations with the speech therapist to refine work in sessions
3.3 In class
- Pass the sheet to the teacher and AVS with a short explanatory note
- Agree on a discreet signal (gesture or image) to remind the child to activate the STOP protocol without signaling to the whole class
- Include the sheet in the PAP as a compensatory aid
- Train the AVS/AESH to use the same formulations as the speech therapist
Golden rule: The impulsivity management sheet is used OUTSIDE of crisis moments, not during. In the midst of an impulsivity outburst, the prefrontal cortex is too busy to process the sheet. The goal is for the protocol to be automated enough to activate itself in the situation.
“The DYNSEO impulsivity management sheet is the first thing I introduce in ADHD management. In role-playing during sessions, we simulate difficult situations and practice the STOP protocol. After 6-8 weeks, I hear parents say 'he stopped, he thought, and he chose differently.' That’s the real victory.”

FAQ — Impulsivity Management Sheet
Q1 From what age can the impulsivity management sheet be used?
The sheet in its complete version is suitable from 7-8 years old, when metacognitive reflection abilities allow for retrospective analysis work. For 5-7 year olds, a simplified version with only the 2-step STOP protocol (S = stop, T = think) is more accessible. For adolescents and adults, the complete sheet with the "action plan" section is particularly valuable for developing sustainable strategies in professional and social life.
Q2 Does the sheet also work for emotional impulsivity — tantrums?
Yes — but with an important caveat. During a tantrum, the brain is overloaded and cannot use the sheet. The sheet is a tool for PREVENTION and DEBRIEF — it is worked on during calm moments to automate the responses that will activate (gradually) in tense situations. For acute crises, the emotion thermometer and immediate discharge strategies (calm corner, breathing) are the first response tools. The sheet then comes in to analyze and prepare.
Q3 How to distinguish ADHD impulsivity from opposition or behavioral disorder?
ADHD impulsivity is distinguished by: its spontaneity (no premeditation), the genuine regret that often follows the behavior, consistency with other signs of ADHD (inattention, hyperactivity), and improvement with management strategies (which is not always the case in oppositional disorders). A speech therapy and/or psychological assessment allows for differentiation of these conditions and guidance towards the most suitable tool. In case of doubt, the DYNSEO impulsivity management sheet is useful in both contexts.
Q4 How to measure progress with the sheet?
Several indicators: the frequency of impulsive incidents per week (keeping a simple count); the delay between the stimulus and the reaction (does the child stop more and more often?); the quality of the post-incident debriefing (does the analysis become more refined?); and the teacher's reports on classroom behaviors. For adults, a self-questionnaire on impulsivity filled out every 3 months provides a more objective measure. The sheet itself, filled out regularly, serves as a log of progress.
Q5 Is the impulsivity management sheet compatible with ADHD medication treatment?
Yes — and the two approaches are complementary. The medication reduces the intensity of impulsive dysregulation and facilitates the use of behavioral strategies. Behavioral strategies (including the sheet) develop self-regulation skills that persist outside the medication's effective ranges. The combination of both approaches produces the best results in all clinical studies on ADHD.
