Why summer can quickly go off the rails
ADHD doesn’t take a holiday. On the contrary, the loss of the school framework can amplify difficulties in organization, attention, and regulation. The summer stress points:
The energy of a child with ADHD is not a flaw to be silenced, it's fuel to guide. Offering real opportunities to expend energy every day, followed by short and varied activities, calms much more effectively than repeated "calm down".
A flexible yet clear framework
Three pillars for a more serene summer, for the child as well as the family :
1. Move every day
Physical activity is the best regulator of ADHD. Plan at least one real time for movement each day : cycling, running, swimming, outdoor games. A child who has expended energy is a more available and calm child.
2. A flexible visual routine
A pictorial schedule of the day helps the child orient themselves without feeling trapped. Keep key markers (meals, bedtime) and leave room for the unexpected.
3. Short sequences
Better to have several activities of 15-20 minutes than one that is too long. Alternate, vary, change locations : this is the rhythm that suits their attention.
💡 Anti-crisis tip : turn instructions into "missions" or timed challenges. Play and movement make what would trigger immediate opposition when presented as an obligation.
Activities that channel energy
The goal : expend, vary, and give purpose. These activities work very well with a child with ADHD :
- 🚴
Sports and physical activity — cycling, climbing, swimming, trampoline, running. The ideal fuel to release excess energy. - 🎯
Challenges and missions — treasure hunts, obstacle courses, daily challenges. The concrete goal captures attention and motivates. - 🔨
Short manual activities — DIY, cooking, building. Quick projects with a visible and rewarding result. - 🌳
Outdoor activities — parks, forests, gardens. Space to run and the calming effect of nature, a winning combination. - 🎲
Turn-taking games — rhythmic board games, cooperative games. They gently work on waiting, frustration, and concentration.
“With a child with ADHD, it's better to plan for too much movement than not enough : daily physical activity is often the key to more composed behavior for the rest of the day.”
To frame the days without making them rigid, keep these three markers :
A screen that makes you move, not sit
Screen time is often a headache with ADHD. The solution ? A screen that alternates short reflection and movement, rather than passive and endless scrolling.
🎮 COCO, the app that gets you moving between games
This is the spirit of COCO THINKS and COCO MOVES : short cognitive games (memory, logic, attention) interspersed with active breaks that invite the child to stand up and move. Perfect for a child with ADHD who needs rhythm.
The child moves regularly : no more static and passive screen time.
Brief sequences, calibrated for fluctuating attention.
Games that gently engage concentration and memory.
A clean interface, without advertising or unnecessary solicitations.
Channeling energy and attention
A few simple reflexes radically change the atmosphere of a day :
A physical activity first thing in the morning sets the stage for a calmer and more available day.
15-20 minutes per activity, then change. Follow their rhythm instead of fighting against it.
Always keep a "backup" activity on hand : unanticipated boredom leads straight to conflicts.
Simple and unique instructions, rather than a long list that the child cannot memorize.
Maintain a regular bedtime even during vacations : lack of sleep significantly worsens agitation.
- Days without physical activity
- Long monotonous activities
- Unanticipated downtime
- Multiple and lengthy instructions
- Passive screens at will
- Late and irregular bedtimes
- Movement every day
- Short and varied sequences
- A ready backup activity
- One simple instruction at a time
- An active screen (COCO)
- Protected and regular sleep
